THE WORKSHOP.
Subject: Workshop on Prosecuting and Judging Core International Crimes before National Courts

When: Wednesday, October 13, 2021, 13:00-18:00

Where: Palais Trautson, Museumstraße 7, 1070 Vienna

The Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Fundamental and Human Rights and the University of Vienna in cooperation with the Genocide Network Secretariat and the Austrian Ministry of Justice organise a workshop to discuss current challenges of international criminal proceedings before domestic courts within the EU and, in particular, before Austrian courts. The introductory workshop focuses on prosecution of core international criminal cases (genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and crime of aggression) and offers a forum for practitioners to discuss current challenges and obstacles, to debate judicial strategies in the fight against impunity and to learn about best practice examples from other countries.
Participants of the workshop will acquire an improved understanding of ongoing trends in this
area, the practical issues in building a case and the specific evidentiary challenges. Furthermore,
practitioners will become aware of aspects of judicial cooperation, focusing on instruments within the EU, as well as of how different Member States of the EU deal with those challenges.

Target group
Open to members of the Austrian judiciary who are dealing or are likely to deal with core international crimes and/or judicial cooperation in criminal matters and/or judicial response to Foreign Terrorist Fighters (FTFs) or cumulative prosecutions of FTFs for core international crimes and terrorism-related offences. Additionally, the workshop is open to members of the Austrian police and representatives of the immigration offices, provided a nexus is given to core international crimes.
